Publishing Industry Directory

It can be overwhelming to keep the relationships between publishers, imprints, distributors, and rep groups straight. The Publishing Industry Directory organizes publishers by parent company and, if different, the publishing house of which they’re an imprint. I keep the database updated to the best of my ability, but if you see anything amiss please reach out -- the more help I get the more accurate the PID will remain.

This database is IOS responsive, but many of the manipulation features (search, group, filter, sort) aren't included when browsing on a phone or tablet. To use the database to its fullest potential, be sure to visit this page on a computer.
How to use the Publishing Industry Directory
The PID is grouped first by parent company, then by “imprint of.” Within those groupings, publishers are organized alphabetically by "Company Name." Rather than scroll through ~4,500 publishers, you're probably better off clicking on that magnifying glass search field in the upper right and typing in the company you're looking for. Here's a couple other helpful tips:
  • If you click on "Grouped by 2 fields" button and select "Collapse All," that will minimize each parent company and make navigating the PID a lot easier.
  • You can collapse or expand groups by clicking on the carat at the left side of each heading.
  • When your cursor hovers over a company, a blue arrow icon will appear. Click on that to expand the record and see all of that company's information without having to scroll left and right. (Or you can scroll left and right.)
  • If you want to see all publishers distributed by a certain distributor, click on "Group" and select "Distributed by." This also works with "Repped by" or "Imprint of" (or whatever your parameters are).
  • Note that sometimes those crazy publishers like to have imprints within imprints (like how Pantheon is an imprint of Knopf Doubleday, but Knopf Doubleday is an imprint of Penguin Random House). That's why there's a column for "Imprint of" and another for "Owned by," the latter of which will indicate the parent publisher.
